Why convert an image to JPG?

The format that opens properly in virtually all programs and devices, without a plugin or any workarounds, is JPEG (or JPEG). Why people convert to it is largely for the universal support they receive:

• Your file was refused by an app or website. There are many upload forms that only accept JPG or PNG, and HEIC or WebP files are rejected with a generic error message. That is easily resolved by converting to JPG.
• Your iPhone photos are in HEIC format. By default, iPhones store photos in HEIC format, a space-saving option that doesn't receive the same level of support as JPG, JPEG, or PNG. Windows, many web forms, and many other software applications cannot open it or don't support it. All that is done away with with JPG.
• Smaller file needed. The lossy compression of JPG files dramatically reduces the size of the picture when compared to the same photo in PNG, BMP or TIFF format, sometimes by 5 to 10 times, which can be quite important when sending photos in emails, loading pages or when saving.
• You are creating an image to be printed or a document. JPG is the most reliable of any format for most print workflows as well as Word and PowerPoint.

To convert an image to JPG in three steps.

1. Upload your file(s). PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF, AVIF, and SVG are all supported as input. It is also possible to do batch uploads, you can convert an entire camera roll export or product photo folder in a single pass.
2. Determine the quality level you would like. A good slider (0 to 100%) allows you to fine-tune the file size and sharpness. Between 85-90 % is the optimum for web and general use, between 95% and above where the image is destined for print.
3. Download your JPG. Store files separately or as a single zip file for files that were converted from a batch.

What is the result of converting each format?

Not all formats convert in the same manner and at times, it is best to know some of these quirks beforehand rather than having a surprise later:

• The most important one is transparency, PNG to JPG. PNG allows for a transparent background, while JPG doesn't, so if you have a transparent area, it will be filled with a solid color (usually white) when you convert it. To preserve transparency, keep your PNG if it's a logo or graphic or convert it to WebP.
• HEIC to JPG: 1-to-1 conversion — you will have the same picture, the same quality and it will be in a format that almost everyone can open. It's the most common real world application of image to JPG tool, almost entirely because of the use of iPhone photos.
• WebP → JPG: Also usually lossless in perceived quality, if the WebP image was already high quality, but some of the most old software may not be able to read WebP as an input, which is why you're converting it.
• GIF to JPG: When converting GIF to JPG, only the first frame (typically the most animated one) will be transferred. If you must save the animation, save it as a video file or as a WebP animation.
• TIFF/BMP → JPG: These are large and are typically scanned or archival images. If it's going to any other medium that requires a smaller file size, such as email or Web, then you'll want to convert to JPG.

When JPG is not the right choice, there are three other formats available: JPG, PNG or WebP.

The standard for photos is JPG but if it is not the best format for all photos:

For images that have flat colors, sharp edges or text (such as a logo or a screen shot), converting to JPG may cause noticeable compression artifacts around edges and text (PNG is better for that type of image).

To prevent loss of quality when converting to JPG.

JPG uses lossy compression, which results in permanently discarding image data when it is saved. This is usually not a problem at good quality settings, but a couple of practices ensure clean results:

• Don't convert from a previously saved and re-saved JPG; quality loss accumulates with each conversion!
• The rule of thumb is 85% quality or better for anything that's going to be visually important; lower only if it's important to have something that's not very sharp.
• If you really want to get to a certain pixel size, resize first, then convert to JPEG; otherwise, the result will be cleaner if you resize a JPEG that is already compressed.
