What This Tool Does
This tool can split a single PDF document into two or more separate PDF documents, according to how you wish to split it:
- By page range — turn a 40-page report into three files: pages 1–10, 11–25, and 26–40
- Every X pages — automatically divide a long document into divisions, such as 5 pages per document, etc.
- Manual picking — click on a scissors icon between any two pages to select a page for manual picking, and a new file will start there.
- Pull out particular pages — select the pages you need (pages 3 and 7, for instance) and output them to a new file, discarding the rest.
In either case, the text, images, fonts and formatting are left intact. When a PDF is split, there are no file compression or re-rendering involved; it simply divides the pages of an existing PDF into separate files.
Splitting PDFs into Three Parts (3 Steps)
- Upload your file. Drag and drop the PDF, or click to select it from your device.
- Decide how to divide it up. Use page ranges, split it every X pages, or click on the pages to mark your own splits.
- Split and download. Do so for each of the resulting files, and/or download them all as a ZIP.
No installation, no account, no watermarking added to files.
Common Reasons People Split a PDF
| Situation | Why Splitting Helps |
|---|---|
| A book or set of papers that has been scanned. | Divide into individual chapters or documents in one long scan. |
| A massive report/commission. | Be sure to only send the relevant portion, not the entire file. |
| The maximum size of attachments is set at 100MB. | Create smaller PDF that are compliant with the size restriction within a large PDF. |
| A batch file that contains multiple invoices/batches of records. | Split a large PDF into individual invoice/record PDFs. |
| A signed or formal agreement or document. | Only abstract out one page with the signature or a certain exhibit for reference. |
Splitting vs Extracting: What's the Difference?
These terms are used almost synonymously, but there is a difference that it's important to be aware of:
- Splitting renders each document into several new documents, but does not delete any of the original documents.
- Extracting removes all the pages except those you extract, which are not saved anywhere else except for being extracted.
A lot of the split tools, such as this one, can split the whole document into sequential parts or split only the pages that you choose and ignore the remainder.
Will Splitting impact on Quality, File Size or Signatures?
- Splitting: This just divides existing pages into new files, it does not re-compress images, re-render text, or change the formatting in any way. Each of the resulting files is the same as the page(s) in the original.
- Note: Splitting does not reduce the size of the individual output files (because each file has fewer pages) but the total size of all the split files will be approximately the same as the original. If you want to make your PDF smaller, but not multiple files, then you will want a dedicated PDF compressor.
- The only actual downside to digital signatures is this one. If splitting a PDF results in having a digital signature, the resulting files will not have digital signatures, since the signature was based on the full original PDF. If a legally valid signature is required, retain the signed document in its entirety and avoid splitting and consider other means of retaining the signature, such as printing a specific page range as a copy and saving that as a PDF.
